How to Use ChatGPT Projects
ChatGPT Projects can be accessed directly from the ChatGPT interface. Look for the Projects tab in the main navigation bar. Here, you’ll find an organized list of all your saved projects, making it easy to pick up where you left off. Unlike regular chats, which reset each session, Projects provide a persistent workspace where you can maintain documents, notes, and files over time. You need an paid ChatGPT subscription to find these options in your interface.
Lets start by creating our first project.
Step 1: Creating a New Project
- In the left navigation bar, find 'Projects' and click on the '+' sign next to it.
- In the New Project window, enter a descriptive name for your project and click 'Create Project'
Step 2: Managing Workflows and Files
- Once the project is created, you will see the following window. You can start chatting within your project or even drag an old chat into the project and continue it as a part of the project
- In you project you can add files that serve as context for your project and also instructions on how you would like ChatGPT to respond.
- In this example, we are creating a project to build on a Growth plan for a software company. Lets add a few files that will give context to our project. Click on add files and choose the files you would like to upload. You can choose multiple files at a time.
- Once the files are uploaded, they will be stored as a part of the project and referred by the GPT for context. Now, lets add instructions for the GPT. Click on the edit icon and type or paste in instructions for the GPT.
- Type or paste in instructions that you want the GPT to follow. These instructions could add additional context that would help your work, or define the tone and approach of the GPT.
- Now that your instructions and project files are in place, you are ready to start chatting with your GPT.
- Throughout your work within the project, all your chats will be persistent and you can find them in your navigation bar on the left side, under the name of the project. You can have multiple projects and switch between them. Each project can have its own files and custom instructions.
- You can also switch between models in different chats within the project. For Ex, if you want to use a reasoning model like o1 or o3-mini for complex reasoning tasks, you can do so. It will still utilize the context provided by the files and instructions stored at the project level.
