Details

  • Meta has introduced a Bill payments feature in WhatsApp in India, letting users find, manage and pay everyday household and utility bills directly inside the app as of September 2026.
  • The rollout involves WhatsApp and Meta India, led by Managing Director and Country Head Arun Srinivas, and is powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) bill payment network.
  • The feature provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills and loan repayments, with payments via UPI, debit card or credit card.
  • Users tap the ₹ icon on the WhatsApp home screen to see a Payments Home view with pre-fetched bills, past and upcoming payments, popular categories, and support for multiple accounts under a single provider (e.g., home, office and family).
  • Bill payments is being rolled out gradually across India and will reach all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks, extending WhatsApp’s existing use for phone recharges, metro ticketing and citizen services into a broader recurring payments hub.

Impact

Integrating high-frequency bill payments into WhatsApp deepens the platform’s role in India’s digital payments stack and could accelerate Bharat Connect utilization by bringing tens of millions of users into a familiar interface. Over the next 12–24 months, this move may shift more recurring transactions into in-chat experiences, intensify competition with bank and fintech bill-payment apps, and influence product roadmaps toward embedded payments and super-app-style utility workflows.
